War in the Heavens for Freedom on Earth The first interstellar war, a generation ago, left humanity enslaved. Now humans fight in the armies of their masters to save themselves from annihilation. At least, that's what the propaganda insists is true. What the layers of lies keep hidden, is how badly the new war is going for the people of earth. Now it's Dylan Kane's turn to blast into the heavens and join the battle, but what his masters don't know, is that by putting a weapon in his hands, they're giving him the key to unlocking his hopes of freedom. When the railgun slugs are tearing through his ship, and the vacuum is sucking the life out of his wounded friends, will Dylan's years of repressed rage turn into enough bravery to make his dream come true? The Freedom's Fire Series book 1 - Freedom's Fire book 2 - Freedom's Fury book 3 - Freedom's Fray

First off, keep in mind I reserve 5 stars for something mind blowing great and amazing that is ready to become the next book every one who reads in the same genre has heard of. This is close enough to get 4 and a partial. Not quite at the fifth though I'm tempted as an early reviewer to round up. A good first person read with a jump into an interestingly different life in the future with the earth occupied by a fairly foreign alien race. It certainly drew me in after I read the sample and I've already bought the next book. I have to know what happens next. This book contains a few technical details to attract sci-fi nuts like me that sets up the fictional science without slowing the story. The pseudo science details are just part of the backdrop, coming to the surface here and there to tweak the plot. The main character is a somewhat average Joe that wants a better life. early on I thought some statements in his internal dialogue to the reader were conflicting or confusing but by the end they are simply portrayals off the depth of human nature and how our present viewpoint on anyone and everything is a culmination of all experiences with it. That viewpoint sways with the experience that is in the forefront of or minds. If your tempted to read jump in or at least read the sample. A reading list I subscribe to suggested it and I thought it might be worth it. I read the sample and I had to know the rest. So Give it a chance you'll enjoy it if you like sci-fi and the world of what if it creates.

Freedom Fire Volume 1 9781546704393 Bobby Adair Books Reviews
While this was a very well written military sci-fi, I've dropped 3 stars off for bring yet another short installment masquerading as a complete book. I really hate this tendency of wrapping up (sort of) in the closing chapter and then not finishing the actual story. Stay tuned for the next book, kids. Maybe we'll be lucky and he'll actually finish the book in the next one. Spoiler he doesn't! It ends in a cliffhanger as well. I'll not waste any more money buying a book by chapters.
OMG. It's on, us against the aliens and the action starts early and just never stops. Even the protagonist, Dylan Kane, can't quite believe that years haven't already gone by when it's mere days, such are the stress levels.
Humanity is repressed and the Earth is being raped of resources to support the alien war effort. Kane has had enough, and through some good planning and a does of good luck, he ends up in a position to do something about it...maybe. All he has to do is overcome a few hundred mile-long dreadnoughts and another alien species that look suspiciously like Neanderthals with the strength of gorillas, whilst keeping clear of the mind-reading alien overlords who have made his life such a misery.
The action is frenetic, there is death by the tens of thousands, there is high-tech and low-tech and tech-wreck, so something for everyone. Adair brings a briskness to the writing that manages to keep the pace up, backfill story arcs where needed, and yet does not feel like a 'rush to the end' that some action authors end up with. He also provides emotional insights to some very broken people without laboring the point. At one point I even wished I could reach into the book and just kill one of the characters, such was the connection, and that's a spectacular trick to pull off.
Heartily recommended if you like military sci-fi - and I'll invoke Heinlein's classic "Starship Troopers" as a comparison - but even if you like sci fi in general, it's that good.
Really enjoyed the book. It's offbeat and colorful. The setting is pretty grim, a generation after being conquered humanity is fighting a losing war for its slave masters. The nefarious Grays don't care about humans - whom they've killed by the hundreds of millions, but now their enemies the Trogs have invaded. Humanity is divided against itself, the overseers and the slaves. How can they resist? Follow one group of freedom fighters as they take up the challenge, overthrowing their immediate superiors, and taste freedom for the first time when they take off with a starship equipped with a new weapons system.
I like how Bobby Adair makes his heroes so fallible and generally normal. They're not perfect people, they're flawed in serious ways, they feel anger and despair. They're not cookie cutter heroes, but they rise to the challenge.
I especially have to say, the author's sense of humor with the encore at the end of the book was really quite amusing.
Bobby does it again. Not that I'm a fan off his writing, or anything. I have read the Slow Burn Series (all of them) and his collaborations and I was excited to see he was writing exactly the type of SciFi I love.
And doing it well!! I want all three right now but it seems that waiting for the third in the series is what must be done. RATS!!
