Awesome book. Takes you back to your high school football days.
This book brings you onto the field and locker room, with insights only a true enthusiast can give you. It is clear this book is about more than just Southern California Football. A must read for anyone with kids in sports or just fans of the games. I highly recommend.
If you're a fan of High Football fan especially in Southern California this is a must read. The pages put you literally on the field with the players and gives a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes as well. A very realistic account of what high school football is all about. We all know a "Pineapple" a "Bustamonte" a "Fred X." it's a real page turner.
This is a great read for everyone from those who love high school football to those to who have no idea about the game. The reader dives into an in depth look at a young boy's decision to play football and witnesses the triumph, pain and joy that is high school football. It's a real and honest look at what the typical experience a high school football will have.
Strongly recommended to anyone with a love of football, whether you're about to play freshmen football in the fall or if you last put on a helmet 30 year ago it will take you back to those moments you cherish.
A truly great story unfolds in the pages of Joe Torosian's first novel. With high school football at its core, the story of Dale Andrade shows how a young man grows in all aspects of his life thanks to being a part of a team and a football community. As someone who grew up and played football in the San Gabriel Valley area of California that Torosian is talking about... it is almost scary how real the situations, thoughts, and moments play out as you turn the pages. I've read the book twice now and I can say the second time only helped to hone my perspective on how great of a job Torosian did in capturing the tangent dreams of a high school football player and all of the workings of a high school football program. Any high school football player, past and present, or anyone who has spent time in the bubble that is high school athletics should read this book.
Okay, Joe Torosian, I finished. You are a great writer to keep me interested in a subject I have little knowledge of. Being in youth work for so many years, I saw our teens in each of your characters. I really appreciated your story line and wanted to take Fred, Dale and Pineapple out for a Coke (separately). Lena is a sweetie who will go far... the narrative of the games was superb. Even I (53 year old female, non-athlete) could relate to the energy, elation and heartbreak both in the stands and on the field. I think I can say I loved the book. Interesting and thoughtful narration of high school life, relationships, influences and spiritual quest, while not screaming about any one thing. Well done. Looking forward to the next one.
